Continents

Continental designations indicate where species are found regularly in the breeding or non-breeding season, and vagrant occurrences are not included. The continental boundaries used here are based strictly on physical geographical criteria, and species endemic to islands, even those close to continents (e.g., New Guinea, Galapagos, Madagascar), are included in the “Insular” category. The islands and island groups included in the latter category are of sufficient size and isolation from the large continental land masses to support endemic raptor taxa. Antarctica is omitted because no diurnal raptors occur there on a regular basis.

The continental designations included in the database are:

Africa
Asia
Australia
Europe
North America
South America
Insular
