Biography
Dr. Michael (Mike) Wallace has served the Zoological Society of San Diego as a wildlife scientist in the Applied Animal Ecology Division of CRES since 1989. He coordinates the reintroduction program of the endangered California condor in Baja California, Mexico. He is the California condor species coordinator for the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and Condor Recovery Team leader for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Mike earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife science from Unity College (Unity, Maine) in 1973. He earned a master’s degree in wildlife ecology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1979, followed by a doctorate degree in wildlife ecology in 1985 from his study of the Andean Condor in Peru. He has participated in numerous field research projects throughout North and South America, and has extensive experience in techniques for wildlife capture, marking, and census. Mike has supervised the release of captive-produced California Condors in the Sierra San Pedro Martir, Baja California Norte, Mexico since the inception of that project.
